Ombudsman


The Ombudsman works with the District as a community liaison to resolve problems or concerns of students or family members to achieve resolutions that are acceptable to all concerned parties. Using conflict resolution practices and implementing proactive measures to reduce potential issues or conflicts, especially regarding diversity and cultural or social emotional concerns. 

The Ombudsman:

  • Works independently as a confidential, impartial advisor taking into account the interests and rights of all parties involved.
  • Plays an intermediary and facilitating role between students, families and the school.
  • Provides assistance with presenting facts to the appropriate school representatives regarding community news and concerns. Works to increase family knowledge of community resources, to make connections, assist with referrals for the families to engage in activities and support groups.
  • Coordinates annual face to face meeting between Community Support Agencies and the Salmon River Administration.
  • Coordinates and implements diversity programs with Salmon River Administration and staff.
  • Works with Principals to plan and implement transition-type activities for groups of students.
  • Works closely with the Mental Health Committee and Attendance Committees within the school District to ensure student needs and supports are met.

Breanne Herne serves as the Ombudsman for Salmon River Central School District. Herne works closely with staff, students, families and outside providers in her role, helping manage and resolve conflicts and uncomfortable moments in a respectful way.

Herne grew up on the Akwesasne Reservation and graduated from the Salmon River schools before continuing her education at SUNY Potsdam where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees. Previously, Herne worked for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in the Division of Social Services as both a Preventative Foster Care Caseworker and as part of Child Protective Services.
